Billy’s Gaming Pick of 2008: ‘WoW: Wrath of the Lich King’

The year of 2008 has had some spectacular releases, and picking the one game that stood out among the heavy hitters has been a difficult choice. There were a number of titles that were my favorites this year including Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Resistance 2, Fallout 3, Mario Kart Wii, Left 4 Dead, Space Invaders Extreme, and more. There was always an excellent gaming experience lurking around every corner. However, there was one game I kept coming back to each month, and in November it added a massive expansion that pushed it to the top of my list. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King would undoubtedly be my quintessential gaming experience of 2008.
It started almost a year ago, with me having a gap in console gaming and finally getting around to doing the final push from level 63 to 70 in Outland. Granted I was late to the party, but other work and gaming obligations, and an earlier personal WoW intervention kept me from investing the time. And for those who have ever delved into an MMO, getting involved to any extent requires a lot of time. But I finally made the jump, and it was well worth pushing through the quests, instances, and raid runs. After 70, while I don’t believe in doing raids over and over again, I focused my efforts in the Battlegrounds, and grinded day after day to get the full armor set.
Then this summer, I finally got a taste of Wrath of the Lich King during the beta. Immediately creating a Death Knight and playing through the DK starting zone, I vowed to create a Death Knight after I leveled my main character to 80. The storyline is excellent, quests are creative, and beginning at level 55 inspires a non-alt believer into cheating on a main character. Only Blizzard can introduce an alternate crack that you want to smoke alongside your normal crack. Seriously.
World of WarCraft: Wrath of the Lich King IntroCinematic
Now on the road to 80, I’m taking my time, and enjoying all of the new zones and adventures they hold. The quests are well thought out, diverse, and the overall experience is richer than previous areas. The addition of more voice acting and dramatic sequences really envelop the player into the storyline, and the detailed environments, new enemy types, and music are the best Blizzard has ever created. And currently sitting around level 74, I can’t wait to see all that Northrend has to offer. And that’s without seeing the final version of the Death Knight quest line. I’m screwed.
World of Warcraft for me is like the ex-girlfriend I can’t shake. I know there are other girls out there, and I’ve messed around with them too, but WoW keeps enticing me back to its dangerous arms. And like a sucker I keep coming back for more, regardless of warnings from my family and friends.
