Gears of War Digital Cert Fiasco Kills Game
A digital certificate that expired on 1/28 effectively kills the game Gears of War, as users who try to run it receive a "'You cannot run this game with modified executable code, please reinstall" error.
The issue has been traced to the aforementioned expired digital certificate (shown). Obviously since the game was released in Nov. of 2007 for the PC, no one at Epic Games or Microsoft could possibly imagine that anyone would still be playing it 15 months later, right?
It's hard to decided whether to call this hilarious, sad, stupid, or just plain silly.

An Epic Games Super Moderator posted the following on the Epic Games forum:
We have been notified of the issue and are working with Microsoft to get it resolved. Sorry for any problems related to this. I'll post more once we have a resolution.
Fortunately, resetting the clock on the PC seems to work for many. However, it's just plain silly that something like this would take down a game. And considering how hard the gaming divisions at Microsoft were hit by the recent layoffs, they might be waiting for some time (Gears of War is an Epic game but is published by Microsoft Game Studios).
New "Batman: Arkham Asylum" Video Shows Gameplay and More Joker
Almost as if queued to make sure that it is not confused with Pandemic’s long-since canceled, but still talked about Batman game, a new video for the Eidos developed Batman: Arkham Asylum has been released. As with the last to see the light of day this one is pretty Joker heavy, which is fine by me. Even better though, this time around we get some light gameplay action. There’s a fair amount of the Dark Knight bouncing all over the dripping ruins of the Asylum and laying the socko on a host of goons. Nice!
There are still a fair amount of whispers swirling around about who if anyone will buy Eidos. If someone does happen to lay down the cash hopefully it won’t effect the continued development and release of the game. One of the front runners in the buyout is Warner Bros., who are also working on the publishing/distribution of Arkham Asylum, so maybe this is a good thing. The game has a tentative release date of May 1, which may just be a placeholder since that is a Friday, but regardless it is scheduled to make an appearance on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. Check it out the video below.

‘DC Universe Online’ Nabs ‘Crisis On Infinite Earths’ Legend Marv Wolfman
Big Download has reported that the most recent issue of Wizard magazine has spilled the beans on a DC Universe Online secret. Apparently, Marv Wolfman is going to be contributing to the game. The site noted, "Wolfman’s job will be to expand and add onto the storylines and plots that have been created for the game by fellow comic book writer Geoff Johns." Johns and Wolfman have collaborated in the past; Wolfman served as a consultant to Johns when he was writing Teen Titans.
This is brilliant news! I’m such a huge Wolfman mark; his work on Crisis on Infinite Earths, The New Teen Titans, Batman, Nightwing, etc. was awesome. He’s a truly legendary writer and the video-game business is lucky to have him.
What do you think of Wolfman’s involvement with DC Universe Online? Does it make you more excited for the game? It should!

Railroad Trains People Using Games
The Union Pacific Railroad has a new and exciting way to train (get it?) its workers: Video games! Rail Operations Simulation is not likely to appear on a console near you, because the program is designed to realistically teach players to maneuver locomotives, operate switches, and sort cars onto different tracks depending on destination. It might be fun as a game if you added some carjackers with bazookas and a radioactive tiger or something, but as a simulation, it’s probably more educational than enjoyable.
According to the the railroad’s general director-safety and security Scott Hinckley, "Video gamers, like those who play Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, feel right at home using Union Pacific’s latest training technology… This is a natural training medium for employees who grew up in the video gaming environment and it enhances their extensive safety and operation training."
So there you have it, gamers, an exciting and fulfilling career in engineering and train management can be yours… just make sure you don’t get bored one day and crash trains into each other, like I know you do with video games!

Electronic Arts To Reinvent Need for Speed

Electronic Arts announced plans today to reinvent the Need for Speed series. EA is launching three separate Need for Speed games: Core, casual and "Play 4 Free."
Need for Speed: Shift is EA’s core take on the franchise. It’s abandoning most of the "urban" vibe of the past few games in favor of a realistic simulation of both cars and drivers! According to EA, Shift is "Designed to deliver a true driver’s experience that reflects contemporary motorsports, Need for Speed SHIFT is built by racers for racers." It comes out this fall for the PC, PSP, PS3 and 360.
Need for Speed: Nitro is an arcade racing game that will feature vibrant and eye-catching visuals. EA says, "Gamers can build up their boost as they drift and drag behind their opponents and use it strategically to change the course of the race, but watch out for the cops! It’s a Wii and DS game, coming this fall.
Need for Speed: World Online is the ‘Play 4 Free’ MMO to be released to Asia first. It will let players pick and mod licensed vehicles and take on the rest of the world in rubber burning races. Sounds pretty intriguing.
So which one do you want to play most? And what do you think are the chances of these game revitalizing the franchise?
