Nintendo Patches The Conduit’s Spawn Glitch?

e4e0f_theconduit-485x339 Nintendo Patches The Conduit’s Spawn Glitch?

Yesterday Nintendo released Wii System Update version 4.2, and aside from annoying the modding community by automatically removing the Homebrew Channel, 4.2 seems to have patched a certain problem with the Wii’s flagship first-person shooter, The Conduit.  Several Conduit players have quickly reported that the game’s now infamous spawn glitch has ceased to occur since 4.2’s introduction.

This news arrives months after a report by NintendoEverything that the game’s developer, High Voltage Studios, was working closely with Nintendo for a potential solution to a glitch in the game’s multiplayer mode.

The spawn glitch was a bug that would occur randomly when joining a match, and it would manifest itself by way of a 1/2 or 1/4 reticule in the middle of the screen.  The player would then be stuck in their spawn location, unable to move or fire until the match had ended.  Sometimes the spawn glitch could repeat itself two or three times, leading to much frustration since a system restart would generally be needed to bypass the flaw.

Below is an example of the spawn glitch at work:

We discovered the spawn glitch for ourselves shortly after publishing our review of the game.  Aside from the rampant infestation of hackers, the spawn glitch was the number one problem affecting The Conduit’s otherwise enjoyable multiplayer.

We contacted High Voltage for comment, but at the time of publishing this article we haven’t received a response.

So to see for ourselves whether or not the problem had been fixed, we fired up our copy of the game (after downloading 4.2) and tried a few different matches of multiplayer.  Despite playing the game for about an hour, we encountered no spawn glitches, even when the usual warning signs had appeared.  For us the guaranteed warning sign was usually an improperly timed “3, 2, 1…” countdown from the game’s announcer while we were loading into a new match.  Every time we heard the countdown preceding our entry into a new game, we knew we were in for a system restart.

This time, however, we were greeted not with a spawn glitch, but with a seamless transition into spectator mode until the current match had ended.  Patching of Wii titles after their release is not entirely unheard of as there have been claims that Wii System Update 4.1 had fixed a bug with Wii Sports Resort.

While we can’t officially confirm Nintendo’s patching of the spawn glitch, we can at least note that it has now failed to occur, even with its usual tell-tale signs, after 4.2’s release.  If true, then this system update may be one of the Big N’s best so far, and a much-needed reassurance for both the Wii community and third-part developers as well.  It should at least ease the pain of some annoyed Conduit owners.

Questions about subwoofer placement and performance…

Ok, imagine this:

I have a large basement. About 22′x30′. It’s a large rectangle.

Speakers used -

Fronts - Bic Acoustech HT-88s
Center - Bic Acoustech HT-65
Rears - Athena B1.2s
Sub - Speakercraft Bass X-10

At one end of the rectangle is my TV. I have the sub off to side. I was playing video games and I noticed my sub is pushing air. I can hear that, but it isn’t making bass notes. A perfect example is when the bomb blows up in "Angels and Demons". It’s supposed to be a very long and deep bass note, like a nuke going off, but it’s just pushing air. No sound is coming out of it. The sub is going crazy. I can see that, but it’s not making sound.

Is my basements shape at fault. Sub placement at fault? Should I move the sub to the middle of the room to the right of the couch? Not sure what to do here guys.

If I go in my room, the bass in some places, like a against a wall sounds better. It’s weird, I guess the sound waves reflect off my back wall a through that door in the first picture. I’m not sure.

Where do I place the sub for optimum performance?

EDIT: I just replayed that part of "angels and demons". I stood in the back of my room (first picture, door on the right). Sounded much better in there, clean and clear.

2nd EDIT: I think it’s just the air moving out of the vents. Maybe I shouldn’t of gotten a vented sub.

Which 26" LCD-HDTV (selection)?

September 30, 2009 by admin · Comment

Hey.

I have to buy a 26" LCD-HDTV for my parents. It should have a built-in DVB-C tuner.

These are pretty much the only models available in my country:

Samsung LE26B460
http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/t…etail&tab=spec

Sony KDL-26S4000
http://www.sony.at/product/t15-s-ser…TechnicalSpecs (sorry for the german link, but this model isn’t available in the USA/UK)

Philips 26PFL5604H
http://www.consumer.philips.com/c/fe…04h_12/prd/at/ (sorry for the german link, but this model isn’t available in the USA/UK)

Those models are quite similiar according to their technical specs, only the Philips has a Full HD display, which isn’t necessary for a TV that size anyway, imo.

Also, I’m not sure if those TVs can decode HD signals (MPEG-4/AVC)? According to the official websites, the Samsung and the Philips models should be able to do it, but I couldn’t find anything about the Sony, does anyone know?

Now to my actual question: Do any of you guys have experience with any of these models or can you recommend a specific manufacturer? All I really care for is the picture quality (ie. colors and contrast, etc.) and that the DVB-C tuner works perfectly.

I hope I’m posting in the right forum and that this post is actually allowed and not annoying because it gets asked a lot or something.

Thanks a lot in advance!

LucasArts Unveils Lucidity

For anyone out there even remotely interested in game development or the art of making video games, I highly recommend checking out the new developer series over at the LucasArts Workshop blog devoted to the upcoming platforming title Lucidity.

In part one of the first installment, developer Brett Levin takes you through the intricate process of how LucasArts went about designing the game’s enemies (types, styles, patterns, placements, etc.). It’s a fascinating read, and really brings home the incredible amount of work that goes into making games. Perspective ho!
